If you are a birth parent or relative
Once they have reached the age of 18, adopted people can trace their birth relatives if they wish. The new law makes provision for birth relatives to seek information which could lead to the possible tracing of an adopted adult. This must be done via an Intermediary, who will help you by making enquiries, searching and possibly making contact although whether information is shared or contact established is dependant on the adopted adult and their wishes and feelings.
You may find it helpful to talk to someone or meet others in a similar situation,
- if you have had a child adopted, however long ago
- if you are aware of a brother/sister of yours who was placed for adoption
- if you are a birth relative of an adopted person.
You may have met with your adopted child or anticipate doing so and need to talk about your feelings.
The agencies within SWAAC can offer intermediary services which may include:
- Individual counselling
- Advice before or after a reunion
- Someone to provide a link between you and the adopted person
- Assistance with contact issues Some agencies work with specialist independent agencies who can offer additional services.
It is also possible that you can be introduced to others in a similar situation. Group meetings for birth relatives have been arranged by some agencies and are a possibility for you depending upon your situation.
All individuals are treated with respect and this is a confidential service.
If you are affected by adoption and feel the need of some support then please contact the adoption team in the local authority where you live or the agency that dealt with the adoption Please remember that the provision of a service is subject to an assessment of need.
